Longwood Gardens is one of my favorite places. The blue poppies that bloom in the winter are my favorite part of the place.
Pierre du Pont built Longwood in the early 1900s to save the land from being used for lumbar. Since Pierre was fascinated with world fairs and traveled extensively, he brought many of those ideas back and implemented them into his gardens. Knowing he would one day open the gardens permanently to the public (although he often did while he lived there too), he made beautiful additions to the land: Italian water gardens, elaborate fountains, outdoor theaters, and more.
